Atlantic City Surf News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 23, 2003) â Bridgeport's Rolo Avila hit a one-run single in the seventh inning to lift the Bluefish over the Atlantic City Surf, 4-3, Wednesday evening in front of 2,750 fans at the Sandcastle.
Atlantic City jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Jose Velazquez ripped his 12th double of the season into the right-centerfield gap to drive in Ric Johnson and Brandon Jackson, who each singled. Juan Thomas' RBI groundout in the fifth inning then gave the Surf a 3-0 advantage.
Surf starter Andy Zwirchitz tossed five innings of no-hit baseball till Avila led off the sixth inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, Willis Otanez spoiled Zwirchitz' shutout bid with a two-run homer to left field, cutting the Surf lead to 3-2.
The Bluefish knocked Zwirchitz (7-5) out in the seventh inning after Tony Rodriguez' RBI single tied the contest at 3-3.
Surf reliever Craig Mattson then surrendered the go-ahead run when Avila laced a single that plated Tony Mota, who was hit-by-a-pitch earlier in the inning.
Zwirchitz finished with six and one-third innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two and walking three.
Bluefish reliever Keith Davis (2-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs through two innings with two strikeouts.
Bridgeport closer Mike Guilfoyle recorded his league-leading 22nd save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Brandon Jackson and Velazquez each led the Surf with three hits while Johnson added two hits.
ON DECK: The Surf and the Bluefish resume their series on Thursday, July 24, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. It will be "Christmas in July" complete with a "Toys for Tots" toy drive and a special appearance by Santa Clause himself.
