Berkshire Black Bears News Release

The Berkshire Black Bears won a close game with a solid baseball performance tonight at Wahconah Park, 2-1 against Les Capitals.

Tonight's game was a battle of hurlers, Tony Harden for the Black Bears and Lance Franks for Quebec. Each pitcher threw 8+ innings tonight, allowing just three walks combined in a tight contest. After allowing a run in the top half of the fifth, the Black Bears equalized immediately. Mark Burnett hit an RBI single to the center, scoring P.J Johnston from second. In the eighth inning, Chris Briones hit a seeing-eye single to center and advanced to the second on a wild pitch by Franks. After Ryan Jones struck out, Shane Hopper drilled an RBI single to center, allowing Briones to the go-ahead run from second. Les Capitals made their last stand against in the ninth with considerable heart. With one out Harden hit Carlos Rodriguez with a pitch and Eddie Lantigua's single put runners at the corners, ending Harden's night, as Berkshire skipper Darren Bush went to his closer, Matt Bailie. Bailie brought his "A"-game tonight, as the Black Bears' stopper cut off Quebec's resistance. Bailie struck out John Ballon and got Asdrubal Oropeza to pop out to end the game.

Harden (7-1) put on a strikeout performance equal to that of Quebec's Jeff Harris from the prior evening. The right-hander picked up his seventh win while tossing ten strikeouts, allowing only one unearned run, four hits and just a solitary walk. Franks fell to 3-2 with the loss, allowing two runs and nine hits with five strikeouts. Matt Bailie recorded his seventh save of the season, putting him in third place among closers in the Northeast League.

The final game of this four game series is scheduled for 7:20PM tomorrow and the Black Bears will send the ace, Rick Guttormson (4-6) against Les Capitals All-Star, Jordy Alexander (4-6).
