Fish Take Another Series with Sunday Win

August 1, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes' bats boomed and then the bullpen held off the pesky Lake County Fielders as the Fish won their second straight series and moved a game over .500.

The Goldeyes scored three in the first and seven more in the fourth and then held on to beat the Fielders 10-6 in Zion, Ill., Sunday afternoon as Winnipeg improved to 5-2 on their current 10-game road trip and also won their second consecutive road series.

After winning two-out-of-three in Rockford, the Fish won three-out-of-four in Lake County and are now 34-33 on the season, a half a game ahead of fifth-place Gary (33-33) and just a game back of third-place Joliet (34-31).

The Fish got it started with one out in the first when Price Kendall singled, Wes Long walked and then Juan Diaz singled home Kendall. Kevin West doubled home Long and with Diaz at third and West at second, Justin Justice came up and singled home Diaz.

Leading 3-0 heading into the fourth, the Goldeyes exploded. With one out, Vince Harrison singled and Dee Brown walked and then Aharon Eggleston hit his 16th double of the season to drive home Harrison. With runners at second and third, Kendall drove home Brown and Eggleston to make it 6-0. That's when Long singled to send Kendall to second and then Diaz came up and drilled a three-run homer, his 17th bomb of the year, to give the Fish a 9-0 lead. But the Goldeyes weren't finished.

West singled, Justice singled and that sent West to third. Luis Alen then came up and hit a sacrifice fly to score West and Winnipeg had a 10-0 lead.

The never-say-die Fielders scored two in the sixth, three in the seventh and one more in the ninth, but relievers Chad Benefield, Zach Baldwin and Bobby Korecky shut the door to help starter Jason Mackintosh (1-2, 4.79 ERA) record his first victory of the season.

It was a big day for the Goldeyes hitters who pounded out 16 hits. Eggleston, Kendall, Diaz, West and Justice all had multi-hit games. Kendall had three hits, two RBI and raised his batting average to .326; Diaz had two hits in five trips with two runs scored and four driven in (he now leads the Goldeyes with 53 RBI) and raised his average to .304; West had three hits in five at bats, scored a run and drove one in and raised his average to .327; and Justice had a three-hit game as well.

The first five batters in the Goldeyes lineup are now hitting .301 or better.

Winnipeg will now move on to Gary to start a three-game series with the SouthShore RailCats on Monday night. The game can be heard live in Winnipeg on 1290 CFRW, beginning at 7:05.
