RailCats Take Finale 13-2 Over JackHammers

JOLIET, IL - Adam Klein knocked in five and Tanner Townsend connected on a grand slam as the Gary SouthShore RailCats (33-33) took the series finale 13-2 over the Joliet JackHammers (34-31) Sunday afternoon at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers dropped three of four in the series and fell to 3-4 this season against Gary.

Two big innings did in the JackHammers on Sunday, starting with a six run third inning. Klein delivered a two run single to give Gary a 2-0 lead. Mike Massaro doubled and Louis Ott was intentionally walked to load the bases for Townsend. The shortstop sent the first pitch from Ross Stout (5-8) over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 6-0 Gary advantage.

Gary plated five more in the seventh, sending ten hitters to the dish. Six consecutive hitters reached base starting with a one out walk to Mike Reese. Mike Rohde drove in a run with a double and Zach Rodeghero collected an RBI single. After Mike Valadez singled, Chris Carrara knocked in a run with a double and Klein doubled home two more for a 13-0 lead.

The JackHammers got on the board in the eighth, launching two solo homers off Zeb Engle. Jon Nelson picked up his 20th of the season, drilling the left field concession stand on the fly. Chris Colton sent a long ball towards the picnic area in left to batters later for the 13-2 final.

Stout picked up the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Five different JackHammers went the rest of the way with Michael Rocco surrendering four runs in 1.1 innings.

Andy Weeks made his first start of the season for Gary, working the first 3.2 frames without allowing a run. The southpaw surrendered three hits while walking two and striking out one.

James Baker (2-3) earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

Jonathan Wyatt and Rafael Mendez led the 'Hammers with two hits apiece with Nelson and Colton collecting the two runs batted in.

The JackHammers are off tomorrow before beginning a three game set in Kansas City on Tuesday. Todd Privett (6-4) and Ryan Knippschild (7-4) is the scheduled pitching matchup. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:55 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
