Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Even when they hit the ball hard, the Winnipeg Goldeyes just can't get one to drop.
Sunday afternoon in front of a great crowd of 6,876 at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes were beaten 5-1 by starter Robert Coe and the visiting St. Paul Saints.
The Goldeyes set a franchise record for the fewest number of runs scored in a three-game series (3) after losing 4-1, 4-1and 5-1 to the Saints this weekend.
More importantly, with the loss, the Goldeyes have dropped four straight games, have fallen to 48-38, have lost six of their last seven and are now only two games ahead of St. Paul in the Wild Card race.
St. Paul scored two runs in the first and one more in the fifth off hard-luck Goldeyes starter Todd Privett and that's all they needed as Winnipeg has now scored only three runs in the last 36 innings. The Saints added two runs off four Goldeyes relief pitchers in the ninth to blow the game open.
The Goldeyes only run came in the bottom of the fifth when Amos Ramon doubled and came home on a single by Price Kendall.
In the end, Winnipeg had seven hits and got a runner as far as third base only twice in the ball game. In the last four games, the Goldeyes have mustered only three runs on 24 hits even though they had five line drive outs on Sunday afternoon.
St. Paul starter Coe (11-4, 2.95 ERA) got the win while Privett (5-6, 4.03 ERA), who went only 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on just three hits, suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes got on the bus Sunday night and headed to Gary, Ind., where they will open a three-game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Tuesday night. Ace Walker will get the start for Winnipeg.
Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
