Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
After a tumultuous start to the season on Opening Day in Texas, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are cruising as they hit the middle of a 10-game road trip to begin the season.
The Goldeyes (3-1) put up three crooked numbers in an 8-4 win over Amarillo (1-3) before 3,113 fans at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium Sunday night.
The win gives Winnipeg its first series win of the season after dropping the first game of the four-game set on Thursday night. The Goldeyes are now 9-1 in 10 franchise games in Amarillo and 12-1 overall against the Sox.
"Anytime you can go into a road series and come out with a series win is big," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the Jewel 101 post-game show. "We're off on the right foot and have set the tone for this road trip."
After the Goldeyes scored a run in the top of the first inning, which marked the fourth consecutive game in which they scored in the first inning, second baseman Jake Blackwood widened the lead to 4-0 with a three-run home run in the top of the third.
Amarillo replied with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the third, including a solo home run from former Goldeye Cory Patton, to knot the game 4-4.
The tie wouldn't even last half an inning, though. In the top of the fourth, Goldeyes right fielder Donnie Webb led off with a single and then scored on a single from third baseman Ryan Pineda. After Pineda moved to third, Kuhn would single him home to give Winnipeg a 6-4 lead.
The Goldeyes capped the scoring in the top of the sixth, as first baseman Casey Haerther doubled, Pineda tripled and Guida singled to start the inning and tally two runs.
Nick Hernandez went four innings in his first start for the Goldeyes. He gave up four runs and took a no decision.
The story of the game from a pitching perspective for Winnipeg was rookie reliever Gabe Aguilar, who came into the game with runners on first and second and needed just six pitches to escape the inning without giving up a run. He followed that with a six-pitch 1-2-3 sixth inning.
"He came into a tough situation and went right after those guys," Vermilyea said of Aguilar. "That's the middle part of their order. He pretty much won us the game right there. If he gives up a hit, they tie the ball game up."
For his effort, Aguilar picked up the win, while Amarillo starter Mike Nannini took the loss.
Five Goldeyes players had multi-hit games, including Tyler Kuhn, whose three-hit performance extended his multi-hit hitting streak to four games. Blackwood led the Fish with three RBI.
Winnipeg continues its 10-game road trip in Laredo with the first of three games against the Lemurs tomorrow night. Chris Salamida (0-1, 54.00) will look to rebound from his Opening Day start for Winnipeg against Sean Tracey, who will make his season debut for Laredo.
The pre-game show on Jewel 101 (100.7 FM) with Steve Schuster begins at 7 p.m. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
