Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
ST. PAUL, MN- The Gary South Shore RailCats bounced back in big time fashion to pound out a 14-5 win over the St. Paul Saints and win their first game of the year ending a three game loosing streak. Behind the some big bats and the arm of Stephen Bougher the RailCats never trailed in the ball game.
The RailCats took the lead in the second with one out Justin Gominsky singled up the middle then went to third during the at bat of Jeremey Hamilton when Saints starter Cole Nelson (0-1) over threw first base trying to keep Gominsky close at first. The ball went down in the corner allowing Gominsky to go all the way to third. Hamilton then sent the second pitch after that to right for an RBI single and it was 1-0 RailCats. Zac Mitchell would follow with a walk then with two outs Drew Martinez hit a hard ball to first that Saints first baseman Henry Wrigley could not pick clean and was charged with an error allowing two runs to score and the RailCats had a 3-0 lead.
In the third inning Ryan Babineau hit the first RailCats homerun of the year to right field to give the RailCats a 4-0 lead. RailCats starter Stephen Bougher (1-0) was in a good early groove as he retired the first 11 he faced. The Saints picked up their first hit on a solo homerun by Evan Bigley off of Bougher in the home half of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1. Bougher would allow only two more hits leaving the game after six with a quality start.
The RailCats added another run in the fifth with two outs Zac Mitchell doubled and Ryan Miller walked off reliever Drew Gay. Danny Pulfer singled to score Mitchell and the lead was 5-1. The two clubs were both quiet until the eighth when the RailCats would send 13 batters to the plate and score eight runs. The key hit came from Wally Backman Jr. who made the score 7-1 with an RBI single that scored a pair. Gary would score six more in the inning behind two bases loaded walks and another RBI from Danny Pulfer and it was 13-1.
The Saint were able to scratch out two runs in the eighth but the RailCats added another to extend the lead with a Zac Mitchell RBI in the eighth to make it 14-3. St. Paul scored two more in the ninth before the RailCats closed out the game 14-5.
The RailCats moved to 1-3 while the Saints go to 3-1. Gary will continue their opening road trip in Sioux Falls for a two game series beginning Monday night at 7:05pm. The RailCats will send Morgan Coombs (0-1) to the mound making his second start against a to be named starter for the Canaries.
