Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (May 18, 2014) - The Wichita Wingnuts (3-1) proved that they can win games by outscoring opponents already, but with Sunday afternoon's 3-0 shutout win over the Grand Prairie AirHogs (1-3) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, they showed that they can hold their own in a pitcher's duel as well. With the win the Wingnuts took the series three games to one.
Wichita starter Justin Klipp achieved a quality start in his first outing of 2014, working 6.0 shutout innings and allowing just four hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts. In relief of Klipp, relievers Mike Zouzalik, Patrick Mincey, and Matt Nevarez each worked a scoreless frame and combined for three strikeouts. Nevarez earned his second save as a result of his efforts.
The Wingnuts' scored all the runs necessary in the very first inning against left-hander Shawn Spainhoward, who was making his professional debut. Jake Kahaulelio hit a one out single, stole second base, and scored on an RBI double by Brent Clevlen, the 700th of Clevlen's career. After Clevlen swiped third, Chun-Hsiu Chen followed with a single to plate Clevlen and make it 2-0. Two batters later, Dillon Hazlett lifted a shallow fly ball into center field. The shortstop Abel Nieves and the center fielder Eric Baker did not communicate and the ball dropped and bounced over Baker's head for another run producing double and a 3-0 advantage.
The AirHogs tried to make a push in the sixth, Klipp's final frame of the day. Brandon Pinckney and Nieves singled to start the inning, but were each retired when Andres Rodriguez grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice that fell just short of a triple play.
The Wingnuts will go with left-hander Alan Williams in Monday's match-up with the Kansas City T-Bones, the first installment of the KTA Turnpike Showdown. The T-Bones hurler is to be announced. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be found on Oldies 92.7 KWME.
