Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Kyle Anderson gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes a solid start in Fargo on Monday night. It wasn't enough.
Anderson pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed only three runs on five hits, but the Goldeyes offense couldn't get started and Winnipeg lost its second straight game, 3-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 17-25 on the season and dropped the first game of this four-game series at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
"Kyle threw strikes with all three of his pitches, kept the ball down and got a lot of ground balls," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea told Goldeyes radio broadcaster Steve Schuster. "He threw the ball really well to both sides of the plate. He was getting ahead of hitters with his fastball and getting the ball over the plate. He was throwing his change off of that fastball and he did a great, great job tonight keeping the hitters off balance. He kind of hit a wall in the fifth inning, but he worked hard and got us through to the seventh inning."
The Goldeyes got off to a great start. Centre fielder Adam Heisler led off with a home run - his second home run in as many days - but Winnipeg couldn't hold the lead. A wild pitch by Anderson in the bottom of the first allowed Drew Muran to score from third and the game was tied 1-1.
Muren gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead with a solo homer in the fourth, but the Goldeyes tide it up in the fourth when Brad Boyer singled home Jon Weber from second.
But the RedHawks won it in the seventh when Joe Staley's sacrifice fly scored Joe Bonfe from third.
Fargo finished with three runs on just six hits, but the Goldeyes scored only two on nine scattered hits. Heisler, rookie Chris Robinson and Weber were the only Goldeyes to produce multi-hit games. All three of those Goldeyes had two hits. However, Heisler's home run and a double by Josh Mazzola were Winnipeg's only extra-base hits.
Fargo reliever Tyler Thompson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the victory, while Anderson (1-3, 4.99) took the loss. RedHawks closer Mike Nesseth (1.59 ERA) picked up his fifth save.
The Goldeyes and RedHawks will play Game 2 of this four-game series in Fargo on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night's game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.
The Goldeyes will return home on Friday night to open a four-game series with the first-place St. Paul Saints. Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
