Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

On the back of the seventh straight quality start and seventh straight victory for Sioux City Explorers starter Ryan Zimmerman, the Gary SouthShore RailCats couldn't get the bats going, falling 4-1 at the U.S. Steel Yard on Monday.

The 'Cats (20-22) could not solve Zimmerman, who went 6+ innings, allowing only three this on four walks.

Down 1-0 with two outs in the fifth inning, SouthShore had a chance to rally when Zac Mitchell tripled and Ryan Brockett walked, but Jon Jones bounced out to Zimmerman to end the threat.

With RailCats reliever Kevin Osaki getting the spot start Monday, the Explorers (32-12) scored their first run in the third after a leadoff walk and extended their lead to 4-0 after tacking on insurance in the sixth, seventh and eighth.

The 'Cats finally broke through in the ninth inning to avoid the shutout, but the rally fell short when Jamie Del Valle got a pinch hit infield single, which would have brought the tying run to the plate, but Drew Martinez was gunned down trying to score on the play.

Gary has now lost a season-high five straight games going back to Thursday and is now two games under .500 for the first time this year.

The 'Cats are averaging 2.2 runs per games over the last 10 ballgames and are 3-7 in that span.
