Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (July 6, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts have been relatively young and inexperienced in their middle infield since shortstop Alberto Gonzalez had his contract purchased by the Detroit Tigers. By swinging a deal with the Atlantic League's York Revolution in order to acquire second baseman Starlin Rodriguez on Monday, the club added some experience to the middle of their defense.

With the Revolution, the native of Santiago in the Dominican Republic was hitting .288 with two home runs and eight RBI. In 20 games he had recorded 21 hits and walked four times. In his short stint with York he had played shortstop and left field as well as his typical second base position.

Rodriguez, 25, began the 2015 season in the farm system of the St. Louis Cardinals at Double-A Springfield. He was released after going 2-30 with two runs batted in. This was his sixth season with the Cardinals since he was signed as an international free agent at the age of 19 by Tampa Bay in 2009. He played in eight games with the Rays' Dominican Summer League affiliate before signing with St. Louis for the 2010 season.

After playing all of 2010 at the rookie level, Rodriguez climbed through the ranks of the organization and eventually made his first appearance at the Double-A level to commence the 2013 campaign. He would spend part of the next three seasons in Springfield where he hit a combined .241 in 120 games.

The Wingnuts received more good news when outfielder Jayce Ray was activated from the disabled list early on Monday morning. To make room for the additions, Tyler Coughenour and Trevor Jones were released and Brad Mincey was claimed off of waivers by the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
