First place Pelicans take on division rivals

Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Pensacola Pelicans vs. Shreveport-Bossier Captains

SITE: Fair Grounds Field in Shreveport, LA (August 17-19, 2009)

TIME: 7:05 p.m. Central Time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

ABOUT THE SERIES:

This is a critical series for both teams as the Captains and Pelicans make a final push for the playoffs. The Pelicans are in first place by 4.5 games, but the Captains could make a serious dent in Pensacola's lead with this three-game series. These two teams play each other more than any other opponent, and the last series saw the Captains claim a sweep, though weather was on their side. In the final game of the three-game series on July 16, the Pels and Caps were tied at 2 in the fifth inning when a ferocious storm hit. The game continued, and Shreveport-Bossier put a run across before the game was called at the end of the fifth inning. After that game, Pensacola went on an eight-game winning streak.

Pensacola is coming off a three-game series sweep against El Paso and has won 19 of their last 26 games. The Pelicans are currently in first place, 4.5 games ahead of the Air Hogs, and five games ahead of the Captains. The Pelicans recently signed right handed reliever Francisco Butto, the 2009 Caribbean Series MVP; he should see his first game in a Pelicans uniform in this series.

Shreveport-Bossier is coming off a series loss to the Grand Prairie Air Hogs. However, the Captains hope to reverse their fortunes by adding two big arms: lefties Richard Salazar and Drew Coffey. Both will start against Pensacola in this series.
