Madison Mallards News Release
WATERLOO, IA - June 21, 2011. Winners of three straight, the first place Madison Mallards will now turn to right-handed pitcher Chris Burgess (Blackhawk College) to continue the team's streak against the Waterloo Bucks at Riverfront Stadium Tuesday.
Burgess is 2-0 on the season with a 4.05 ERA over three starts and 20 innings pitched. He received a win in his last start on June 15 against the Eau Claire Express after allowing five runs over five innings, while striking out three.
Over this four total appearances, the sophomore from west Chicago has always finished the inning in which he's started.
Meanwhile, the Bucks will counter with left-hander Taylor Eikenberry (Iowa Western Community College), who will be making his first start this summer. In his lone appearance on June 19 against the Battle Creek Bombers, Eikenberry allowed only one hit over 1.1 innings of relief work.
On Monday, the Mallards defeated the Bucks 7-2 to open the three-game series at Riverfront Stadium. Another strong pitching performance was dealt by left-hander Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech), as the soon-to-be redshirt junior threw six shut-out innings of two-hit ball, while striking out seven batters. He needed 97 pitches to pick up his third win (3-0) and lower his already-stellar ERA to 1.17.
Inside the numbers:
No one is hotter at the plate than right-handed hitter Jordan Owen (Tennessee-Martin), who over his last 10 games is hitting .520 (13-for-25) with two home runs and nine RBI. Infielder Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) continues to see the ball well early this summer, as the soon-to-be senior is hitting a robust .408 with two doubles and nine RBI over 12 games.
Infielder Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) isn't afraid of the road, and his numbers reflect it as the junior from Mount Pleasant, Michigan, is hitting .370 (10-for-27) with two doubles, one home run, and three RBI. His .485 on-base percentage on the road leads the team.
