Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU-June 21, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks took game two of a three-game set with Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday night, defeating the Rafters at Athletic Park 9-1.
Woodchucks' centerfielder Danny Susdorf led off the Woodchucks' half of the first inning with a solo homerun off Rafters' starter Michael Huckabay.
Tom Briner, who made his second start as a Woodchuck, worked easily through the first two innings, before he'd allow an unearned run in the third- as Sam Montgomery would single and advance to second on a failed pickoff attempt, before Justin Jirschele would send him home with a double.
Tied 1-1, the 'Chucks would answer with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of third, as Tyler Heineman reached on an error- before advancing on consecutive passed balls - and scoring on a Danny Susdorf sacrifice fly.
Heineman's run would be all they'd need, as 'Chucks pitchers Briner and Nick Greene pitched beautifully, but the Woodchucks' bats would keep on grinding and score seven more runs.
Tyler Heineman would walk with one down in the fifth, and steal a bag during the following at-bat. After a flyout, Danny Susdorf would reach on a botched fielder's choice, which would send Heineman to third, before a two-out double-steal would score Heineman.
With a two-run cushion, the 'Chucks would hang a crooked number in the sixth. With two on and one out, Kyle DeMerritt's grounder would be botched by the Rafters' second baseman, allowing Austin Coleman to score and Cody Regis to advance to third.
After a hit-by-pitch, Tyler Heineman would hit a bases-loaded single to plate a run, before De La Cruz would walk in a run, and Susdorf would score another on a fielder's choice.
Up 8-1 through the sixth, the Woodchucks produced all of their runs on only four base hits.
The 'Chucks would get one more in the seventh, as Mike Gerber - who led off with a double - scored after Cody Regis and Kyle DeMerritt hit consecutive singles.
Tom Briner took the win for the Woodchucks, pitching a strong five innings, allowing only three hits and one walk, while striking out five. Nick Greene took the three-inning save, throwing four frames, allowing only two hits, and striking out three.
In total, the 'Chucks produced nine runs on only eight hits, while the Rafters scored one unearned run on five hits.
With the win, the 'Chucks evened up the away-home-away series with the Rafters at 1-1, before the two teams get set to meet once more on Wednesday night in Wisconsin Rapids.
The 'Chucks advanced to 8-11, while the Rafters fell to 4-16.
