First Look at CHS Field a Winning One

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
With a 7-2 lead after five innings, it looked like the Goldeyes would get off easy.
Instead, the league-leading St. Paul Saints held the Goldeyes to only one more run and added two of their own before the Fish took the 8-4 win in their first visit to the new CHS Field on Sunday night.
After surrendering seven runs on 10 hits, the Saints sent long reliever Drew Gay to the mound. Gay held the Goldeyes to one hit through four innings, three of which only saw three Winnipeg batters at the plate, while St. Paul scored two off an RBI single to centre field.
But it wasn't enough to beat Winnipeg's dominant bats.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring early, as Reggie Abercrombie and Brad Boyer each hit an outfield single in the first to drive in Adam Heisler and Casey Haerther, respectively. The Fish put up two more in the third and three in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-2.
Abercrombie led the Goldeyes offense with three RBI, three hits and two runs scored. Heisler went 4-for-4 and also scored two runs, while rookie Chris Robinson hit his first professional triple in the top fourth. Casio Grider scored an unearned run from third in the top ninth to cap off the Goldeyes 8-4 win.
"That's what wins ballgames," said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. "When your team comes right out and scores two in the first, two in the third and three in the fourth, it makes it a lot easier to pitch."
And the Goldeyes gave starter Matt Jackson all the runs he needed. Jackson pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowed four earned runs on nine hits and only gave up one walk to take the win, while Saints starter Kramer Sneed suffered the loss.
"He's been pitching real well of late, and he's a guy we really depend on," Vermilyea said about Jackson. "If we get a decent start out of our starter right now, we're putting up enough runs to win ballgames, and that's what happened tonight."
With the win, the Goldeyes improve to 24-30, while the Saints fall to 42-13.
Right-hander Tony Smith will pitch the second of this four-game series against the Saints Monday night at 7. The Goldeyes will finish out their eight-game road trip with four against the Kansas City T-Bones before returning home on Wednesday, July 29 to take on the Amarillo ThunderHeads.
