Firkus Leading League and Streaking Warriors
February 15, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The accolades for Jagger Firkus so far this season are numerous, but not unexpected.
The Seattle Kraken prospect leads the Canadian Hockey League in points with 91 and has been pacing an attack by the Moose Jaw Warriors that is one of the most dangerous in the Western Hockey League.
"Coming into the year, Seattle put expectations on me and this was one of them, to try and make sure I was among the top scorers and I didn't think it was an expectation that I'd meet," Firkus said on Monday.
After leading the Warriors in scoring each of the past two seasons, Firkus has taken his game up another level this season.
"Looking back on how hard I worked in the summer and how much I appreciate all the guys that helped me out throughout the summer, whether it's on ice or off ice," Firkus said.
Firkus has moved into the top-five all-time in Warriors history with 275 points in his 213 career WHL games, currently sitting just five points back of Jayden Halbgewachs in fourth.
He's also fourth all-time in goals with 123, which trails Brayden Point by 11 for third.
Over the weekend, Firkus made Warriors' history by extending his point streak to 24 games, which is a new modern era (1996-present) record.
The previous record of 23 games was set by Warriors captain Denton Mateychuk earlier this season, which actually broke Firkus' mark of 21, which was set last season.
"When it was getting to the 20s, Dents and I were talking about it, it was kind of funny just going back-and-forth and to get it, it's pretty funny actually because Dents took it from me, so it's good to get it back from him," Firkus said.
Over the course of the streak - which started on Nov. 25 - Firkus posted 18 goals and 30 assists for 48 points in 24 games.
Since returning from the Christmas break, the Warriors forward has put up 13 goals and 35 points in 15 games, which has helped put him back in the scoring lead for the WHL and all of Canada.
"Throughout them all, it's just been such a team game, I've been rolling, but throughout the last 20 games, we've been really, really good and that's been a big part of the big picture is how the team's doing," Firkus said.
As hot as Firkus has been, the Warriors have been just as hot with 16 wins in their last 18 games and a 15-2-0-0 record since returning from the Christmas break.
The Warriors have had three separate five-game winning streaks, including their current one, which continued over the weekend with wins in Red Deer and Calgary.
"If you look at our teams over the past few years, we've always been a good playoff team, but this second half, we wanted to make sure we were getting right to the playoff habits right away," Firkus said.
"The playoffs is a big jump and staying crispy on our details going into playoffs is important."
Despite a number of additions to the locker room throughout the season, Firkus said this Warriors' team remains a tight knit group that is only getting closer with each passing game.
"It's really fortunate to see in the room how much we all care for each other and how much we believe in each other," Firkus said.
"Whether we're up or down in a game, we always have the same belief and we've shown that throughout this stretch."
The Warriors have two home games this week, hosting Brandon on Thursday and then Calgary on Saturday, before heading out on the road for a stretch of eight games in 14 days, starting on Monday in Swift Current and continuing through the U.S. Division.
