Slump in Second Sinks Wheat Kings in Moose Jaw
February 15, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Wheat Kings knew going into a game against the Moose Jaw Warriors that they faced an opponent with explosive offense. That offense detonated in the second period, and would prove to be all the Warriors would need.
Jayden Wiens and Caleb Hadland scored, but the Warriors got three goals in the second period to secure a 4-2 win. Carson Bjarnason made 33 saves in the loss.
"A big key we talked about going into tonight's game was the blue paint battles," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "They scored two goals just banging away in the blue paint, and we in turn didn't get anything. We talk about that an awful lot and it's disappointing and frustrating that those pucks go in."
After a power play each way came to nothing, the Warriors opened the scoring on a beautiful goal. Jagger Firkus split the defense and walked right in, and was able slip a puck under Bjarnason as he was falling.
It wasn't long before the Wheat Kings responded, however. Jackson DeSouza fired a heavy shot through traffic that produced a rebound for Wiens, who was parked in front of the net as he often is. Wiens lifted home the equalizer.
The game turned quickly early in the second. First, the Warriors caught the Wheat Kings on a bit of a broken play as two players collided, leaving Lynden Lakovic to snap home the go-ahead goal. Then, on a Warrior power play, Atley Calvert batted home a rebound out of mid-air to make it 3-1.
A point shot by Denton Mateychuk produced a rebound, and the fourth goal for Moose Jaw. Pavel McKenzie was waiting for it, and much as Wiens had done in the first period, he stuffed home the fourth Moose Jaw goal of the game.
It took a while for the Wheat Kings to push back in the third period, but when they did they were able to get on the board. Hadland tipped a point shot by Andrei Maliavin to make it 4-2. Despite a goaltender pull, however, that was as close as the Wheat Kings got.
It's right back to work for the Wheat Kings tomorrow as they host the Calgary Hitmen. Puck drop is 7:00.
