ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies rallied for a 3-2 series-opening victory against Augusta on Saturday at SRP Park. The club trailed 2-0 heading into the fifth before tying the score and eventually taking a lead for good thanks to Dionis Paulino's fourth career home run. Joe Cavallaro picked up his league-best eighth win of the season after gutting through six spectacular innings (7 K, 4 H).
CAREER NIGHT: Paulino's blast in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in Saturday's tilt vs. Augusta. The outfielder (added to Columbia's roster just four days ago) finished with a career-high four hits (4-for-4), including, not only the homer but, two doubles as well.
NUGGET OF THE NIGHT: It was all Cavallaro, Darwin Ramos and Trey Cobb from the fourth inning on vs. the GreenJackets on Saturday. After Cavallaro allowed a hit to the leadoff batter Orlando Garcia to start the fourth, the trio of pitchers did not allow another base hit the rest of the evening: 20 batters faced, 18 outs (1 BB, 1 HBP from 4th inn. on).
CATCHING FIRE, Pt. I: Hansel Moreno is currently on a eight-game hit streak, his best stretch of the season. In fact, the 21-year-old has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games (the switch-hitter is batting .370 - 17-for-46 - during that stretch which dates back to June 8). During the eight-game hit streak, Moreno holds a .357 batting average (10-for-28). He was batting .177 on June 5 and has since raised his average to .248.
CATCHING FIRE, Pt. II: Shortstop Edgardo Fermin also recorded a base hit on Saturday and has now hit safely in a season-best 12 straight games. The 20-year-old is hitting .354 (17-for-48) over the 12-game hit streak (since June 14).
JUNE STARS: The Fireflies finished June with an 11-14 record but the pitching staff posted a superb 3.27 ERA. Ten different hurlers wound up with sub-3.00 ERAs during the month.
