ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies defeated the RiverDogs, 2-1, in another close game on Wednesday at Joe Riley Park. Tony Dibrell heaved 6.1 strong innings and the starter earned his second win of the season. Columbia has now won six of its last seven games.
LOOKING FOR A KNOCKOUT: The 10 meetings between Columbia and Charleston this season have been decided by 15 total runs. Seven of the 10 tilts (like the two most recent this week) have been decided by a single run.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Columbia aims for its second series sweep of the season (Last: April 16-18 @ Greenville) with a win over Charleston on Thursday.
WHAT'S AT STAKE, Pt. II: The Fireflies are about to finish up a successful month of May. The Fireflies are 16-10 and only Lakewood and Rome have more wins in the month (17) among SAL teams. In fact, a win on Thursday would clinch the best month in franchise history in terms of total wins and winning percentage.
STREAKIN': Outfielder Raphael Gladu extended his franchise-record hit streak to 15 straight games on Wednesday. Only Asheville's Shael Mendoza has hit safely for a longer stretch of time in the SAL this year (17 games, April 17-May 10). Gladu is hitting .358 (19-for-53) during the hit streak.
Longest Fireflies Hit Streaks (2016-pres.):
1. 15-Raphael Gladu ... May 9-pres.
T-2. 11-Rigoberto Terrazas ... April 9-20, 2018
T-2. 11-David Thompson ... April 7-17, 2016
STREAKIN' x 2: There have been three different Fireflies this season to record on-base streaks of 16 games or longer:
1. 29, Jeremy Vasquez (April 5-May 6)* *SAL & franchise-best
2. 20, Raphael Gladu (May 2-present)
3. 16, Scott Manea (April 21-May 12)
MAY MADNESS: 21 of Columbia's 26 games in May (and 29 of the last 36 overall) have been decided by three runs or fewer. Fifteen of those 26 games were decided by a single run.
SUPURB VISON: Columbia is the only team in MiLB with three players leading their respective league in total walks:
South Atlantic League (Low A)
1. Blake Tiberi (COL) - 34
2. Jeremy Vasquez (COL) - 30
3. Matt Winaker (COL) - 29
