LAST TIME OUT: Saturday's game featured the third straight shutout of the series. Columbia fell to Hickory, 4-0. Simeon Woods-Richardson and Bryce Hutchinson both pitched very well, save for the two-run homer each pitcher allowed on the mound. Mark Vientos notched his 14th multi-hit game of the year (which is second-best on the team behind Ronny Mauricio).
0 0 0: The first three games of the series have featured three shutouts:
Thurs. - HIC 1, COL 0 ... T. Brennan (8 IP), A. Mendoza (1 IP)
Fri. - COL 4, HIC 0 ... T. Szapucki (4 IP), T. Megill (4.1 IP), B. Oxford (0.2 IP)
Sat. - HIC 4, COL 0 ... H. Crouse (4 IP), T. Tiedemann (3 IP), G. Wolfram (2 IP)
MOLINA'S MASHING: Since the all-star break, Gerson Molina is hitting .308 (10 GP, 8-for-26). The outfielder was moved up to seven-hole on Sunday.
COLUMBIA HITTERS, BEST BATTING AVERAGES IN 2ND HALF
1. Hayden Senger - .438 (14-for-32), 9 GP, 3 R, 6 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K
2. Wagner Lagrange - .316 (12-for-38), 10 GP, 6 R, 3 2B, 8 RBI
3. Gerson Molina - .308 (8-for-26), 10 GP, 5 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI
JUST ONE: Friday was the second one-hit shutout in franchise history and the first since July 16, 2016. That night, Andrew Church threw a complete game, one-hit shutout by himself against the Rome Braves (4-0 win).
NEAR NO-NO: Columbia nearly did something on Friday that had only happened once before in franchise history. The Fireflies no-hit the Charleston RiverDogs on April 9, 2016, which, ironically enough, was the franchise's first win. That evening, Thomas McIlraith (6 IP), Alex Palsha (2 IP) and Johnny Magliozzi (1 IP) combined to no-hit the RiverDogs at Joe Riley Park.
THE NEWARK EAGLES: As part of Columbia's Negro League Celebration weekend at Segra Park, the Fireflies will wear Newark Eagles jersey, paying homage to the Negro League team that played from 1936-1948 in Newark, New Jersey. The Crawdads will wear Chattanooga Choo Choos jerseys as well.
NUMBER RETIREMENT: One famous Eagle was Larry Doby. The Fireflies retired Doby's number as well as Jackie Robinson and Frank Robinson's on Saturday. The three numbers were unveiled at Segra Park just beyond the centerfield wall. Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play Major League Baseball with the Dodgers in 1947 while Doby, a Camden, SC native, became the first to play in the American League (Cleveland Indians, July 1947). Frank Robinson, the first African-American manager in MLB history, played for the minor league Columbia Reds in 1954 and 1955. All three are members of Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame.
