Rome Emperors News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Rome offense and bullpen continued their dominance against Greenville on Saturday night as the visitors took their third straight one-run game at Fluor Field, this time winning by a final score of 7-6. Justin Dean and Braden Shewmake led the way for the lineup with multi-hit efforts and helped keep the Braves in 1st place in the Southern Division with a 6-4 second half record.
Rome once again got off to a hot start in the 1st inning as Dean hammered the first pitch of the game from Drive starter RHP Brayan Bello to center field for a solo homer. It was Dean's fourth homerun of the season and gave the Braves a 1-0 lead. Rome added another run in the 3rd inning on a sacrifice fly from Shea Langeliers.
Leading the game 2-0 the Braves would run into trouble in the Bottom of the 3rd. An error extended the frame and Greenville's Dylan Hardy drove a 3-2 pitch over the Green Monster for a grand slam homer. The shot gave the Drive a 4-2 lead but Rome would immediately respond in the 4th inning.
Jose Bermudez brought in Ricardo Rodriguez with a two out RBI single to make it 4-3 and two runs scored later in the inning when Greg Cullen's groundball was misplayed into an error. Already leading the Drive 5-4 the Braves got two additional runs in the 5th inning on consecutive RBI hits from Rodriguez and Jeremy Fernandez.
Greenville added single runs in the 5th and 7th innings but the Rome bullpen held on for the 7-6 win, giving the Braves the series triumph.
Reliever LHP Jake Higginbotham earned the win by throwing 3 innings and allowing one run on two hits. He surrendered two walks and struck out four batters. RHP Luis Mora got his first save of the season with 2 shutout innings of work. He allowed one hit, no walks, and struck out two.
Dean went 2-5 with a homerun and scored twice. Shewmake was 2-5 with a double. Langeliers was 1-4 with a double and an RBI. Cullen went 1-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored.
Rome and Greenville conclude their four game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch of Game 4 from Fluor Field is scheduled for 3:05 pm. Rome will start RHP Jose Olague (5-6, 3.66) while Greenville will put RHP Chase Shugart (3-0, 2.31) on the mound.
