LAST TIME OUT: Columbia steamrolled Hagerstown in the series opener on Saturday, 14-6. The Fireflies tallied 13 hits and drew seven walks. Seven of those 13 hits were extra-base hits, including three homers. The eight-run win matched the largest margin of victory this season and the seven extra-base hits also matched a season best. The 14 runs were the most scored in a game since plating 16 against Augusta on July 2.
SUPER-LATIVE: Every single Columbia hitter on Saturday reached base safely and scored a run. Five Fireflies tallied multi-RBI games (Zach Rheams 4, Jay Jabs 3, Matt Winaker 3, Jose Brizuela 2, Dionis Paulino 2).
BACK, BACK, BACK...GONE! Pt. I: Three Fireflies went deep on Saturday:
- Matt Winaker - three-run homer in the first
- Zach Rheams - sixth-inning grand slam (estimated at 439 feet)
- Jay Jabs - first of the year, a two-run bomb in the seventh
The Fireflies have now recorded a homer in five straight games. That's the most consecutive games with a home run in franchise history.
BACK, BACK, BACK...GONE! Pt. II: Columbia has blasted 15 homers over its last 11 games. The Fireflies have 16 in the month of August (15 games). That's second only to Asheville (17 in 16 August games).
WINAKER'S RAMPAGE: The Alamo, California, native went deep in consecutive games (Thurs. @ WV, Sat. @ HAG) for the first time this season. Winaker has now drilled six homers over his last 11 games. He leads the team with 12 long balls and is one away from tying the franchise mark of 13 set by Dash Winningham and Brandon Brosher in 2017. Check out what Winaker has done this month:
- Winaker in August: .351 (15 GP), 9 R, 5 2B, 6 HR, 15 RBI, .422 OBP
THE GRAND SALAMI: Zach Rheams became the third Firefly this season to smash a grand slam:
- Gio Alfonzo - May 5 vs. Lakewood
- Quinn Brodey - July 2 @ Augusta
- Zach Rheams - August 18 @ Hagerstown
TERMINIX PEST PLAYER OF THE GAME: The honor went to Jay Jabs on Saturday. The outfielder doubled twice and homered. The three extra-base hits and eight total bases are career-highs (169 GP as a Mets farmhand).
