Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats announced today that Ken Mastrole will return to the team as the Offensive Coordinator. Mastrole had run the offense each of the past 2 seasons but decided to retire prior to the start of the 2007 campaign citing personal reasons.
"We wanted him in here from day one," Head Coach Kevin Bouis said of Mastrole's return. "He's made a couple of changes and now he's available and we're glad to have him. He'll be able to provide an extra set of eyes for us and be a great asset to have on the bench again."
In 2005 the Firecats averaged 45.1 points per game on offense; that number jumped to a league best 59.2 in 2006 scoring a league high, 129 touchdowns in the regular season.
"It's great to have him back," said Firecats President and General Manager Chris Vallozzi. "He's worked out a few things in his mind and looking ahead to the 2nd half of the season, we're expecting great things."
As a player Mastrole suited up as quarterback for the Firecats in 2001 and then again in 2003 & 2004. He finished his Firecats playing career throwing for 8099 yards and 179 TD's while leading Florida to the 2004 ArenaCup Championship.
"I've missed coaching and being around the guys," Mastrole said. "Vallozzi and Bouis invited me back and I'm excited to get back in there and compete for a championship. I'm fortunate that not only have the Vallozzi's and the Firecats been good to me but BCB Homes has been great in giving me the flexibility to get back on the sidelines. I am ready to get to work."
The 4-3 Florida Firecats host the 3-3 Mahoning Valley Thunder at home this Saturday May 19th. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm EST. Tickets are on sale now. Call the Firecats box office at 390-CATS (2287). Fans can listen to the game online at www.FloridaFirecats.com, www.NBC-2.com & www.ABC-7.com.
