Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- The arenafootball2 (af2) Florida Firecats announced today that linebacker George Lewis has been recognized by the league and received "The NiFTy Big Hit of the Week" award. The award highlights the player who makes the best hit or tackle of the week.

"Every week it's a competition to see who's going to come up with the biggest hit of the game," Lewis said. "It was my week." With Florida trailing the Vipers by eight in the middle of the second quarter, Lewis executed a textbook open-field block on Tennessee Valley's Demetrius Derico during a kickoff return by teammate James McCoy. Lewis' devastating block opened up a big running lane for McCoy, allowing him to scamper 54 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown brought the Firecats within one point of the Vipers. "I told McCoy during the returns to look for me near the sidelines. He did, I got a great block and we got a big touchdown that we needed," Lewis added.

Despite the final result (56-39 loss), Lewis' hit was one of the best of the season. He currently ranks third on the team in tackles with 36. Lewis also leads the Firecats in fumble recoveries with two. He is in his second season with the Firecats. This is his first league wide award.

"George is known as a physical player," said Firecats coach Kevin Bouis. "I'm surprised this is the first time he's won the award to be honest. He's the leader of our defense, he has a tremendous motor and he's always looking to make that big play."

Florida is the only team in the af2 whose players have won the award three times this season. Defensive Back Demetrius Hodges received the league wide award twice.

Florida (6-9) closes out the regular season at home this week against the Kentucky Horsemen (10-5). The Firecats have split their two previous meetings with the Horsemen, with the home team coming out on top each time. The Firecats can solidify a spot in the post-season with a win. Florida is looking for its eight straight trip into the playoffs, tied for second most in af2 history.
