Flint Firebirds News Release
Windsor, Ont. - Despite a hard fought 60 minutes from the Firebirds Sunday afternoon, the Spitfires held on for a 1-0 victory in front of 4,871 fans at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.
Windsor's Cole Purboo scored the lone-goal of the game at 3:44 of the opening frame. Curtis Douglas fired a shot wide of the goal from the right circle that bounced off the end boards where Purboo picked up on the right side of the net. Purboo skated behind the Firebirds' goal and to the center of the left circle where he sent a turn-around shot on net, shortside above Luke Cavallin's right shoulder.
Flint outshot Windsor 13-7 in the first period but the Spitfires overcame the next two periods to finish with a 36-32 lead at the conclusion of the game.
Michael DiPietro (Vancouver Canucks), the second-best netminder in the OHL with a 2.59 goals against average (GAA), recorded a league-high fourth shutout on the year, making all 32 saves. Cavallin was awarded second-star honors after making 35 saves on 36 Windsor shots. The Firebirds were 0-for-2 on the power-play and were 1-for-1 on the penalty-kill.
The Firebirds and Spitfires will play the fourth of six games between the two clubs next Sunday, Jan. 28 in Flint at the Dort Federal Event Center.
