Flint Firebirds News Release
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont - The Flint Firebirds allowed five goals in the first period and could not climb out of the early hole as they were beaten by the Soo Greyhounds, 11-3, on Friday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens. Jeremy Martin scored his first career OHL goal for the Firebirds in the losing effort.
The Greyhounds started the scoring quickly as Jordan D'Intino took a wrist shot from the left wing circle that snuck through the short side of Nathan Day. Less than a minute later, Travis Hayes got loose at the top of the right circle and fired a wrist shot high past Day, giving the Soo a 2-0 lead.
Soo added three more in the opening frame, as Christopher Brown, Marco Mignosa and Justin Cloutier each lit the lamp. Flint then got the lid off its jar in the final two minutes of the period while shorthanded. Martin poked the puck loose at the blue line and sped in with a breakaway. He snapped a wrist shot top shelf past Charlie Schenkel to put the Firebirds on the board.
The Greyhounds kept firing into the second period and struck three more times. First, Julian Fantino beat Day high, prompting Flint to make a goalie change and bring in Jacob Brown. Owen Allard then scored from in tight and Hayes struck again with a back door one-timer on the power play to make it 8-1.
Flint got its second goal just as a a power play began for Soo. Kaden Pitre carried the puck into the attacking zone and skated to the slot. He flicked a wrister high on the glove side of Schenkel to make it 8-2.
The Greyhounds answered with two more in the third from Brenden Sirizzotti and Jack Beck. Daks Klinkhammer then struck for the Firebirds with a low wrist shot that sailed past Schenkel on the far post. Soo answered with a final goal for Fantino that pushed the score to its 11-3 final.
Martin, Pitre and Klinkhammer accounted for Flint's three goals and Day made 22 saves on 28 shots. Brown stopped 14 of 19 shots in relief. The Firebirds fell to 0-1-0-0 with the loss while Soo improved to 1-0-0-0.
