Flint Firebirds News Release
OWEN SOUND, Ont. - The Firebirds erased two separate deficits before Nolan Dann lit the lamp with his second game-winning goal of the weekend as Flint beat the Owen Sound Attack in overtime, 4-3, on Saturday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Dann finished with a goal and two assists and Coulson Pitre lit the lamp twice to help power Flint to the win.
With Flint trailing, 3-2, and less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, Simon Slavicek skated to the high slot and passed to Pitre atop the right circle. Pitre carried between the hash marks and shook a defenseman before a quick snapshot was stopped by Carter George. Pitre gathered his own rebound and lifted a shot over George's left pad for his second of the night, tying the game at three.
In overtime, with his team skating on a 4-on-3 power play late in the extra frame, Oliver Peer sent the puck from the high slot to Dann at the bottom of the right circle. The overager was wound and ready as he slapped the pass on goal, finding space high on the glove side from a sharp angle. Dann's third point and second game-winner of the weekend snapped the back of the net with just 16.2 seconds remaining in OT.
Owen Sound scored the lone tally in the first period while on the penalty kill. Former Flint defenseman James Petrovski intercepted a pass in his defensive end and started a rush up-ice that became a 3-on-2 advantage for the Attack. The initial offensive-zone pass went to Colby Barlow across the top of the circles from right to left. Barlow one-timed the pass back across the zone to Petrovski who then returned the feed to Barlow for a short one-timer that beat Day and made it 1-0.
The Attack then took a 2-0 lead near the 13-minute mark of the middle frame. Barlow carried up the right side and made a drop pass from the outer edge of the circle to his oncoming linemate Ethan Burroughs at the top of the circle. Burroughs leaned into a one-timer that beat Day up high to the far side, pushing their lead to two.
The Birds rebounded with a pair of goals in the final 2:02 of the second period to tie the game. First, Pitre gained the zone and wristed a shot past two defenders and under the glove of George for his 21st of the season. Then Nathan Aspinall sent a pass across the slot to Jimmy Lombardi, who was crashing the net on the left wing. Lombardi was forced below the net but snuck a pass through the crease to the opposite side where Jeremy Martin pounced. He slipped a backhander past George and the game was tied at two.
The Attack reclaimed the lead only 17 seconds into the final frame off a Flint turnover in their defensive zone. Barlow intercepted a pass and slid the puck to Burroughs on his left. His one-timer went past Day low on the glove side for his second of the night and a 3-2 advantage for the home team.
Martin's goal was his tenth of the season and Pitre recorded his fifth multi-goal game of the season. The Firebirds took the season series over the Attack, 3-1-0-0, their first season series win over Owen Sound in franchise history.
Flint improved to 19-23-2-1 overall and 14-10-1-0 in road games with the win while Owen Sound fell to 21-21-2-1. The Birds return to home ice for a pair of home games next weekend, beginning on Friday night against the Barrie Colts. It's Girls and Women in Sports Night and puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dort Financial Center.
