Spirit Host Rangers on 16th Annual Shocks and Saves Night

Saginaw, Mich. - The Saginaw Spirit (30-12-0-1) will host the Kitchener Rangers (30-14-2-0) for the second time this season on Saturday, January 27th, at the Dow Event Center.

In a partnership with the CMU College of Medicine and the Pulse3 Endowment, the Spirit are pleased to host their 16th annual Shocks and Saves night. Prior to the Spirit game against Kitchener, a charity game between local healthcare providers and Red Wings alumni will benefit heart health awareness and the placement of AED's around the region. Red Wings alumni competing in the game include Jiri Fischer, John Ogrodnick, Eddie Mio and more. The Shocks and Saves charity game will begin at 4:00pm.

Last Time:

The Spirit took on the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday, January 25th, at the WFCU Centre. Owen Beck opened up the scoring in the first period before the Spirit allowed three unanswered goals in the second period. Jorian Donovan opened the third period with his first goal in a Spirit uniform. Shortly after another Windsor tally, Ethan Hay scored a goal of his own to make the game 4-3. Joey Willis and Josh Bloom scored two goals late in the third to give Saginaw a 5-4 victory over Windsor. Andrew Oke started in net for the Spirit, saving 23 of 27 shots on goal while Max Donoso started for the Spitfires, saving 29 of 34 shots on goal.

The Kitchener Rangers took on the Soo Greyhounds on Friday, January 26th, at the GFL Memorial Gardens. No goals were scored in the first but the Greyhounds' Marco Mignosa and Matthew Virgilio both scored in the second to give the Soo a 2-0 lead. Matthew Sop scored an unassisted goal for the Rangers followed by Eduard Šalé to tie the game at two. Gavin Hayes eventually scored two more goals for the Greyhounds near the end of the game to give the Soo a 4-2 victory over Kitchener. Jackson Parsons started in net for the Rangers, saving 24 of 27 shots on goal while Charlie Schenkel started in net for the Greyhounds, saving 26 of 28 shots on goal.

Last Matchup:

The Saginaw Spirit are 2-1-0-0 against the Kitchener Rangers this season, with the last game being at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on January 4th. Kitchener's Max Dirracolo scored his first goal of the season followed by Tanner Lam to give Kitchener a 2-0 lead in the first. Calem Mangone and former Spirit forward Dean Loukus scored in the second period, tying the game 2-2. Hunter Haight sealed the deal, scoring a late powerplay goal to give Saginaw the 3-2 victory. Andrew Oke was the starting goaltender for the Spirit, saving 11 of 13 shots on goal while Jackson Parson stopped 30 of 33 for Kitchener.

Players to Watch:

Zayne Parekh continues to lead the team in goals (22), assists (42), second in the OHL, and points (64). Parekh's two-game suspension concludes after tonight's game against Kitchener. Michael Misa is tied with Parekh in goals (22) followed by Owen Beck with 21. Beck continues to pile up the points since being acquired by the Spirit, amassing 14 (5G, 9A) in his last seven games. Andrew Oke continues to lead in all major goaltending categories including a 3.02 goals against average (GAA), a .890 save percentage (SV%), and 19 wins.

Hunter Brzustewicz leads the Rangers in points (69) and in assists (61). Brzustewicz sits second in the OHL in points and first in assists. Carson Rehkopf is second in points (65) on the team and fourth in the OHL. Rehkopf has amassed a league-leading 37 goals with an additional 28 assists. Jackson Parson continues to lead in all goaltending categories for Kitchener including a 2.98 GAA, a .899 SV%, 18 wins, and 4 shutouts, the most in OHL.

Saginaw currently has ten players tied to the National Hockey League (NHL), including Joey Willis (Nashville), Josh Bloom (Vancouver), Matyas Sapovaliv (Vegas), Hunter Haight (Minnesota), Owen Beck (Montreal), Ethan Hay (Tampa Bay), Braden Haché (Florida), Jorian Donovan (Ottawa), Rodwin Dionicio (Anaheim), and Nolan Lalonde (Columbus, FA).

Kitchener currently has five NHL-drafted players in Eduard Šalé (Seattle), Carson Rehkopf (Seattle), Filip Mešár (Montreal), Hunter Brzustewicz (Vancouver) and Matthew Andonovski (Ottawa).
