FireAntz take two of three

[FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.] - The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) played three games in three nights this past weekend, winning two of the three games, and moving back into a tie for first place, but percentage points ahead of Knoxville.

Thursday, December 1st (at Jacksonville): The FireAntz took the road on Thursday to take on the Barracudas. The FireAntz led the season series three to none, coming into the game.

Jacksonville took the 1st period advantage with goals by Rob Kapucinski and Taras Foremsky sandwiched around Sean Edwards first of the season for the FireAntz. In the second period, Scott Corbett (7,8) scored two of his own with Jonathon Charette notching one for Jacksonville. The game was tied at 3 going into the 3rd period.

The Barracudas took a 4-3 lead on a goal by former FireAnt, Chad Peck at 1:26 of the frame. Corbett completed his hat trick at 13:05 to tie the game. Tyler Perry (7) gave the FireAntz the lead at 15:32, getting what would turn out to be the game-winner. Jeff Coulter iced the FireAntz victory with an empty-netter, getting his fifth goal of the season.

Both teams had 31 shots.

Friday, December 2nd (at Huntsville): The FireAntz continued their long trip as they traveled to Huntsville, to play the Havoc, for the second time this season. The FireAntz won the first matchup, 5-1, in Fayetteville.

Mike Degurse would give Huntsville a lead just 19 seconds into the game, unassisted. It was the only goal of the first period. Steve Hynes and Craig Bushey both tallied in the second, prompting FireAntz coach, Derek Booth, to pull netminder Jomar Cruz in favor of Glenn Ridler. Kory Baker (3) pulled the FireAntz within two goals at the 19:17 mark.

Luke Phillips, of Huntsville, would get the only tally of the 3rd period, sending the FireAntz home with only their third defeat of the season, 4-1.

The FireAntz outshot Huntsville 32-27.

Saturday, December 3rd (vs. Knoxville): The FireAntz returned home to take on the Knoxville Ice Bears, in a showdown for first place in the SPHL. Knoxville came into the game with 26 points, and the FireAntz had 24, but two games in hand.

Knoxville got on the board first, on a goal by Bob Rangus, at the 10:52 mark of the 1st period. Tyler Perry (8) answered back for the FireAntz, beating a stingy James Ronayne, who allowed only one goal on 22 shots in the period, for Knoxville.

Nick Kormanyos, who returned after missing seven games with a hand injury, gave the FireAntz a 2-1 lead, netting his third of the season, at 2:17 of the 2nd period. Jason Bermingham tied the game just over a minute later. The FireAntz regained the lead on Sean Edwards second goal in three nights, at the 7:48 mark. Knoxville would come back, once again, on a goal by Kevin Swider at 15:33. The game was tied 3-3 going into the 3rd period.

The FireAntz would take the lead at 8:23 on a goal by Rob Meanchoff, his 2nd of the season. Dean Jackson would ice the game at 13:21 with his 13th goal. The FireAntz moved into a tie for 1st place with the Ice Bears with the 5-3 victory. Both teams now have 26 points.

The FireAntz outshot Knoxville 45-35.

Noteworthy:

Dean Jackson is second in scoring (25 points) and second in goals (13) in the SPHL.

Mike Clarke is the leading scorer among defensemen in the SPHL. He has two goals and 16 assists for 18 points.

The FireAntz move back into a tie for 1st place in the SPHL with 26 points (12-3-2).
