
FireAntz Ice the Polar Twins

[Fayetteville, N.C.] âThe Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) only played one game this weekend after a week off. The rest definitely paid off as the club easily handled the Winston-Salem Polar Twins 7-3, in front of 3,187 people at the Crown Coliseum on Christmas Night.
Shawn Roed, in his final game with the club netted the first FireAntz hat-trick of the season and defensemen Jake Gibson and Joe Dustin each tallied their first professional goal.
The Polar Twins came out roaring in the first period as Chester Gallant scored just 4:37 into the game. Roed answered for the FireAntz however, on the power play at 8:03. Winston-Salem's Shaun Aebig scored at 10:30 to give the Polar Twins a 2-1 first period advantage.
In the second period the FireAntz would score 5 goals on only 14 shots. Dustin scored his first professional goal on a slapshot from the left point that beat goaltender Jomar Cruz 5-hole. Gibson also netted his first pro goal just 2 minutes later on a shorthanded rebound over a sprawling Cruz to give the FireAntz a 3-2 lead. Winston Salem's Trevor Karasiewicz answered, tying the game at 3, at 6:16. Three more goals for the FireAntz, 2 by Roed (10, 11)and the other from Brent Rumble (5) would provide the FireAntz a 6-3 advantage going into the locker room.
Only one goal was scored in the third. Josh Welter notched his 2nd of the season at 4:08. The FireAntz outshot the Polar Twins 33-23. Goaltender Chad Collins earned the win, his 9th, blocking 20 of the 23 shots he faced.
