FireAntz have Record-Setting Weekend

[Fayetteville, N.C.]—The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) snapped a five-game losing streak this weekend with two solid performances that vaulted them back into a tie for second place in the league.

Friday March 4th (vs. Winston-Salem): The FireAntz got on the board early and often in what would turn out to be an SPHL record-breaking barrage.

Fayetteville netted the only goals of the first period off the sticks of Sean Edwards and Jamie Miller. The FireAntz tacked on four more in the second period (Tyler Perry 2, Mike Fournier, and Chad Peck.) The FireAntz led 6-0 after the 2nd period.

In the 3rd period the fireworks continued. The FireAntz tallied six more goals to make the lead 12-0 before Steve Lajoie scored to break up the shutout with just under two minutes remaining.

The 12 goals by the FireAntz broke an SPHL record for number of goals in a game. The mark of 11 goals was previously held by the Asheville Aces, also against Winston-Salem. The 6 goals in the 3rd period tied the record for goals in a period shared by Asheville and the Knoxville Ice Bears.

Perry and Peck each had a hat-trick for the FireAntz. Chad Collins stopped 33 of 34 shots.

The FireAntz outshot Winston-Salem 51-34.

Sunday March 6th (vs. Macon): The Macon Trax came to town on Sunday to play a pivotal game in the SPHL standings.

The FireAntz had opportunities in the 1st period but were unable to capitalize. The Trax, however, converted on two of their chances. Goals by Steve Zoryk and David Deeves gave the Trax a 2-0 lead going into the 2nd period.

In the 2nd period the FireAntz would tie the SPHL record for most goals in a period for the second consecutive game. Goals by George Nistas, Jamie Miller, Chad Peck, Nick Kormanyos, Sean Edwards and Kory Baker gave the FireAntz a 6-2 lead after two periods.

Macon tallied for the only scoring of the 3rd period when Zoryk got his second of the game. The FireAntz won 6-3 and moved back into a tie for 2nd place in the SPHL.

The FireAntz outshot Macon 48-23.

Recent Notes:

The FireAntz have six games remaining in the regular season and have already clinched a playoff berth.

Noteworthy:

Mike Fournier played in his 103rd game as a FireAnt on Sunday, tying Matt Kohansky for the all-time lead in games played with the organization.

Steve Roberts is 2nd in the SPHL with 35 goals.

Kory Baker and Tyler Perry are each tied for 2nd in the SPHL with 47 assists.

The FireAntz have only 3 regular season home games remaining. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the FireAntz as they host Winston-Salem on March 17th. Get ready for summer on Beach Night, March 18th.
