January 14, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO, IL (Wednesday, January 14, 2004) - The Chicago Fire today received the first selection of the second round (11th overall) in this Friday's MLS SuperDraft from the MetroStars. The deal completes the compensation agreement that led to the MetroStars' hiring of former Fire Head Coach Bob Bradley on October 22, 2002. Before giving the pick to Chicago, the MetroStars obtained the 11th overall selection from the Los Angeles Galaxy earlier in the day in exchange for their first round pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft and future considerations.
With the completion of this deal, the Fire has increased its League-high number of selections in Friday's SuperDraft to eleven. The Fire now holds five of the first 20 selections in the draft, including its natural first round selection (9th overall) and four second round picks (11th, 14th, 19th and 20th overall selections). The Fire will follow up with one pick in the third round (28th overall), two in the fourth round (38th and 39th), one in the fifth round (49th) and two in the sixth and final round (51st and 59th).
The 2004 MLS SuperDraft will take place this Friday, Jan. 16 in Charlotte, NC at the Charlotte Convention Center from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. CT, with live coverage of the first hour of the draft being provided by Fox Sports World. As it was in 2003, this year's MLS SuperDraft is being held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Annual Coaches Convention.
