Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Mystique Community Ice Center's goal horn got a workout tonight. The Dubuque Fighting Saints scored a season-high seven goals, including a hat trick by Gordie Green, in a 7-4 triumph over the Waterloo Black Hawks on Saturday night.

The night belonged to Green, the first star of Saturday's game. He scored his second, third and fourth goals of the season in Dubuque's rout of the Black Hawks, scoring for the first time since October 2 against Green Bay. He snapped a rebound off the pads of goaltender Drew Hotte to begin his outstanding night, and that brought the bears cascading from the stands. That put the Fighting Saints up 1-0. Casey Johnson and Evan Smith picked up the assists.

All of the bears thrown to the ice were donated to Toys for Tots in Dubuque.

Green continued his stellar night by stealing the puck in the neutral zone, skating up the left wing, cutting to the middle, and finding the top shelf to put Dubuque up 4-2.

He capped off the hat trick with the eventual game-winning goal, a shot that came off of a pass from Nathan Sucese. A short-side snap shot rose over the shoulder of Hotte, accounting for Dubuque's fifth goal of the night.

Michael O'Leary netted his first USHL goal in an all-Canadian effort. Both Evan and Mitchell Smith, Toronto natives, set the Halifax native up on a tee, twisting Hotte inside out with a deke, putting the Saints up 3-1 at the time.

Sucese, Trey Dodd and Shane Kavanagh also scored for Dubuque. The top line for the Saints have now accounted for 11 points over the past two games. Sucese has accounted for six of those points, with two goals and four assists in a productive weekend.

The Black Hawks had their chances, continually. David Cotton tied the game up at one. Nick Swaney trimmed a 3-1 lead to 3-2. Liam Pecararo got Waterloo within one with his goal late in the second period with a power play marker.

Yuri Terao would score the final goal for Waterloo with seven minutes remaining in the third period, putting the Black Hawks within two goals. Dodd's empty-net goal put any chance of a comeback away.

Waterloo awakened its sleeping power play with two goals on six opportunities. Dubuque got its man-advantage unit going with two goals on four chances against the league's best penalty-killing group.

The Fighting Saints remain home to take on the Madison Capitols on Thursday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center starting at 7:05 p.m. It's the Battle of the Border, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Students with a valid college ID can receive an attack zone ticket and $5.00 in Saints Bucks. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 563.583.6880, or by going online to DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
