Lake County Fielders News Release

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (June 10, 2011) - Coming off a tough 8-4 loss on Thursday night's series opener, the Lake County Fielders (11-3) powered back with a 10-6 win on Friday night against the Edmonton Capitals (7-6).

For the 10th straight game, the Fielders took the first lead in the game. In the top of the 2nd inning, Argelis Nunez, C.J. Ziegler and Patrick Brooks led off the inning with consecutive hits. Ziegler and Brooks had doubles, with Brooks' two-bagger bringing home both Nunez and Ziegler to put Lake County in front 2-0. After Brooks was tagged out in between second base and third base for the first out of the inning, allowing Matthew Redding to reach base, Redding came home to score the third run of the inning on Quentin Luquette's RBI single.

Edmonton did respond with a run in both the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd innings. Capitals starting pitcher Rory Shortell (1-1) singled in a run to make it a 3-1 game through the first two innings. And, shortstop Enrique Cruz came home to score on a fielding error by Lake County third baseman Patrick Brooks, cutting the Fielders lead to 3-2.

But, it was a six-run top of the 3rd inning that put the game out of reach for Edmonton. The Fielders pounded out those six runs on five hits and got some help on two Capitals errors. Redding, Brad Payne and starting pitcher Zac Cline (1-0) all singled to load the bases at the start of the inning. But, it was an error from Edmonton second baseman Matt Rogelstad off the bat of Rex Rundgren that allowed Redding and Payne to score. Matt Mansilla followed with a single of his own to re-load the bases with one out. Nunez followed and delivered a deep blast to center field, clearing the bases with a three-run double to make it an 8-2 Fielders lead. Nunez eventually scored on a throwing error by Edmonton third baseman Carlos Duncan that gave Lake County a seven-run lead. Nunez would add another RBI to his totals with a two-out single in the top of the 8th inning, giving him four for the game.

The big advantage was similar to what Cline received in his last start on June 4th in Yuma, but Cline did not factor into the decision in that game. Cline lasted seven innings on Friday night, allowing four runs (two earned), striking out four and walking three. The seven-run lead the Fielders had would last long enough to get Cline his first victory of the season.

Edmonton would score a run in both the bottom of the 6th and 7th innings, and two in the bottom of the 8th, but they wouldn't come close to matching the Fielders in the second game of the series.

The Fielders will have a short amount of rest before they play the middle game of the five-game series against the Edmonton Capitals. The third game of the series will be a Saturday afternoon matinee at Telus Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00pm local (3:00pm central). The Fielders hold a three-and-a-half-game lead over Edmonton in the North Division standings. You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
