Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Calgary, Alberta -- The Western Hockey League's HUSKY Player of the Month for the final month of the 2004-05 regular season is high scoring right-winger Eric Fehr of the Eastern Division Champion Brandon Wheat Kings.
A 19-year old native of Winkler, Fehr scored eight goals and 20 points in ten games this month as the Wheat Kings won eight games to capture their third division title in the past four years.
The former first round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals, Fehr became the first Wheat King in twenty-one years to win the WHL scoring title, finishing the year with 59 goals and 111 points. The last Wheat King to finish on top of the league scoring parade was Ray Ferraro in 1983-84.
In fact, Brandon featured the league's top three scorers in the WHL this season as Ryan Stone was second with 33 goals and 99 points while captain Tim Konsorada finished in a tie for third with Vancouver's Gilbert Brule with 87 points each. The last team to have the league's top three scorers was the '78-79 Wheat Kings that had Brian Propp, Ray Allison and Laurie Boschman go 1-2-3.
Stone meanwhile captured the third segment in the Canadian Hockey League's Canada Post Stars of the Game campaign. The second round draft choice of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins finished second to Eric Fehr in Brandon's Molson Cup standings this past season.
Fehr and the Wheat Kings continue to prepare for their best of seven opening round playoff series with Moose Jaw, scheduled to get underway Friday night at the Keystone Centre. Tickets for game one and Sunday's game two (MTS Centre in Winnipeg) are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or 780-3333 or online at ticketmaster.ca
In other league news, the defending Western Conference Champion Everett Silvertips have been fined $750 for their fourth multiple fight situation of the season at Tri-Cities last weekend. Head coach Kevin Constantine was also slapped with a one game supsension. Cody Thoring of Everett was also suspended for one game. As for the Americans, the club was fined $500 while defenceman Andy Thompson was hit with a one game suspension. All three suspensions have been served.
The WHL's second season - the playoffs - officially gets underway Wednesday night at Credit Union Place in Saskatoon with the Blades hosting the Prince Albert Raiders in game one of their best of 7 series.
