FC Dallas News Release
FRISCO, Texas (Sunday, May 5) - FC Dallas (5-3-1, 16 points) suffered a 1-0 defeat today against the New York Red Bulls (3-2-5, 14 points) in front of 17,105 fans at Toyota Stadium.
For the second week in a row, FC Dallas was forced to play the majority of the game a man down after Je-Vaughn Watson was shown a straight red card in the 10th minute after colliding with New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill.
New York had its first shot on goal eight minutes later when Roy Miller slid a through ball inside the area to Eric Alexander. The former FC Dallas midfielder attempted to beat goalkeeper Raul Fernandez low to his left side but the Peruvian, making his first start of the season, got down to knock the ball away from danger with a diving save.
Referee Edvin Jurisevic was called into action again in the 26th minute when Fabian Castillo went by four Red Bull defenders at the top right corner of the area. The Colombian went to ground just after entering the area but instead of awarding a penalty kick, Jurisevic carded Castillo for simulation.
Despite being down a man for 35 minutes, FC Dallas nearly went ahead in the 38th minute when Homegrown midfielder Danny Garcia, who was making the first start of his career, combined to set up left back Jair Benitez. Garcia created the chance after receiving a pass from Benitez with his back to goal. The UNC and FC Dallas Academy product then spun and chipped a return pass to Benitez with his left foot that sent the defender into the area against New York goalkeeper Luis Robles. Benitez attempted to lob a shot over the shoulder of Robles but a New York defender recovered in time to block the shot out for a corner kick.
Castillo and Garcia combined down the left flank to set up Dallas' best chance of the afternoon in the 58th minute. Castillo knocked a ball into space and Garcia caught up to the ball in the area. While shielding the ball, Garcia was knocked to the ground by Cahill and Jurisevic pointed to the spot. Blas Perez stepped up to take the free kick, hammering a line-drive to Robles' right side but the Arizona native punched the shot over the crossbar to preserve the draw.
Victor Ulloa cracked a half-volley on goal on the ensuing corner kick, but once again Robles was in position to make the save.
New York finally broke through in the 71st minute when Thierry Henry snuck in behind the FC Dallas defense and pushed a lateral pass into the path of a late-arriving Bradley Wright-Phillips. The Englishman hit the ball to the far post with his first touch to give Red Bull the 1-0 advantage with 19 minutes remaining in the game.
With less than five minutes remaining, FC Dallas pushed additional players forward in search of a game-tying goal but could only come away with four corner kicks and one free kick, all of which were cleared away from danger by New York.
