Fastest game in ValleyCats history

June 27, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

The Tri-City ValleyCats are now 8-2 following an absolutely amazing 12 strikeout performance which allowed Tri-City to take it's second game in a row from the Batavia Muckdogs. The 3-0 win assures the 'Cats sole possession of first place in the Stedler Division for another day. The game marked the seventh time in their first ten games the ValleyCats have struck out ten or more, an absolutely astounding statistic.

The ValleyCats played their fastest game ever with a one hour and fifty-seven minute affair. It previously eclipsed the old mark of two hours one minute when the same two teams faced off at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on July 1, 2002.

The ValleyCats got two runs in the third inning that were unearned because of an error by the Muckdogs. James Cooper reached on an error by Muckdogs second baseman Josh Mader. He then went to second a beautifully placed sacrifice bunt by Wilner Alvarez and then to third on a single by Drew Sutton. Then Jonny Ash grounded into fielder's choice at second. Sutton was retired and Cooper crossed home plate to make it 1-0.

Batavia starter Kevin Sheppard then gave up a hit to Ben Zobrist. Ash went to third base on the play. He wouldn't stay there for long, as Lou Santangelo poked an RBI single to right-field. Ash scored and it was 2-0.

In the fifth inning errors would again come back to haunt Batavia. With Ash on second thanks to a one out double, Ben Zobrist hit his second single of the game to third base. On the play, Anthony Buffone threw a ball across the diamond that got past Zach Norman at first. Ash scored on the throw and it was 3-0.

The Muckdogs fall to 5-5 with the loss. The two squads finish off a three game series Monday night. Ronnie Martinez gets the start for Tri-City. Derek Griffith will oppose him for Batavia.
