Expos expose Yanks
June 27, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Burlington, VT- The Vermont Expos made quick work on Sunday afternoon of the Staten Island Yankees as Jim Henderson tossed eight strong innings and Steve Mortimer smashed a two-run homer as the Expos defeated the Yankees 3-2 at Centennial Field in a New York-Penn league contest which took just one hour and 56 minutes to complete.
Evan Tierce led off the game with a triple to rightfield and scored on a sacrifice fly from Grant Plumley, but that was all the offense that Henderson would allow over his eight innings. After the leadoff triple, the only base runner for the Yankees until the seventh inning came on a walk in the third inning that was erased by a double play ball. Mortimer gave the Expos the lead for good in the second inning with a two-run homer down the rightfield line off Yankee starter Jason Jones for a 2-1 Vermont lead. Those were the only runs allowed by Jones (0-1), who gave up four hits and struckout three in six innings.
Vermont got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by shortstop Jose Contreras. Gus Hlebovy pitched the top of the ninth and allowed an unearned run on two hits, but still picked up his third save of the season. Henderson (2-0) allowed the one run on three hits with two walks and one strikeouts over his eight innings to lead the Expos to their second straight win over Staten Island.
Contreras, John Poppert and Marvin Lawrence each had two hits for Vermont (4-6), while Ofilio Castro was 0-for-3 to snap his hitting streak at nine games to start the season. Tierce had a single to go along with his triple, while Plumley had an RBI and scored a run in the ninth inning.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Monday night at Centennial Field with Jon Felfoldi on the mound for the Expos. Former Major League pitcher Bill Lee will be at the ballpark to throw out the first pitch, while fans are encouraged to wear their pajamas to the game for "Slumper Party" revisited. If the Expos lose Monday night, the Vermont front office staff will sleep in the Expos dugout Monday night just as they did last season during Vermont's 12-game losing streak.
