Fast Start Fades for Goldeyes

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

A four-run first inning didn't mean a whole heck of a lot Saturday night.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (33-33) watched the Lake County Fielders (27-36) score nine unanswered runs, as the Fish fell 9-4 to the Fielders in Zion, Ill.

The loss ends the Goldeyes three-game winning streak.

Winnipeg scored four times on four hits in the first inning, but watched Lake County slowly chip away at the lead. The Fielders scored twice in the third inning and once more in the fourth to cut Winnipeg's lead to just a run. Lake County then pounced for four runs in the fifth inning to take command of the game and tacked on two more in the sixth inning.

The Goldeyes made several attempts to get back into the game, but Fish batters hit into five double plays in the game to kill any momentum they were building on numerous occasions.

Price Kendall, Kevin West and Justin Justice all had two-hit nights for the Goldeyes.

Winnipeg starter Ace Walker went four and a third innings and was tagged with six of Lake County's nine runs in the loss.

Lake County's Zach Ward threw a complete game for the win and surrendered only five hits after the first inning.

One of the few positives for Winnipeg was that Wes Long was able to extend his hitting streak to 14 games - the longest by any member of the Goldeyes this season.

Jason Mackintosh will be on the mound for Winnipeg Sunday afternoon, as the Goldeyes hope to finish the four-game series against the Fielders with their third win of the weekend.
