JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Tommy Farmer gave up one hit, but the Suns didn't get a run for him until the seventh in a 4-1 victory Sunday over the Greenville Braves in front of 4,825 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Farmer (5-5) earned the victory, allowing one hit, no runs and striking out five over seven innings. He didn't allow a hit until Ramon Castro singled sharply to left with two outs in the sixth inning. But the Suns (31-37) didn't score until the inning he was lifted for a pinch-hitter. In the seventh off Braves starter Bubba Nelson, Tarrik Brock, Mike Collins and Gookie Dawkins hit consecutive singles to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. Tony Socarras lofted a sacrifice fly, scoring Collins to put the Suns ahead 2-0.
Reliever Greg Bauer allowed an RBI single to James Jurries in the top of the eighth and the Braves (35-32) pulled to within 2-1. Castro ended the inning on the play when he was thrown out by center fielder Jason Repko trying to advance to third.
Off Braves reliever Roman Colon, the Suns scored twice in the bottom of the eighth. Shane Victorino led off the inning stretching a double he manufactured on looping line drive to left. Daryle Ward singled home Victorino and Victor Diaz tripled to left center to score Reggie Abercrombie, who pinch-ran for Ward. Ward left the game because of a leg cramp.
With a 4-1 lead, Bauer loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before striking out Jean Boscan to end the ballgame. Bauer earned his second save of the season.
Diaz led the Suns with two hits.
Right-hander Heath Totten (3-7, 4.68 ERA) is scheduled to face Braves righty Chuck Smith (NR) at 1:05 p.m. Monday at the Baseball Grounds. Smith, a former Florida Marlin, will make his first appearance with the Braves after joining the team from extended spring training Saturday.
