Knoxville Smokies News Release
Zebulon, NC - Donnie Bridges allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings and drove in three runs with a pair of doubles as Carolina (42-25) sent Tennessee (34-35) to its eighth straight loss in a rain-shortened 7-0 shutout.
The game was called in the bottom of the seventh after heavy rains.
Bridges (5-1) issued five walks but worked his way out of trouble several times. Tennessee was 0-11 with runners in scoring position. Chris Weekly singled with one out in the second, and Kevan Burns stroked a leadoff triple in the third for the only other hit.
Nick Stocks (4-4) allowed a run scoring double to Chip Ambres in the third for the game's first run. The Mudcats came alive in the fifth, scoring four runs with Bridges plating Tommy Bost on his first double. Ambres followed with a two-run triple to chase Stocks. Kevin Sprague entered and allowed an RBI single to Drew Niles before finishing the inning.
Sprague allowed two more runs in the sixth. He walked Bost and allowed a single to Brandon Harper before Bridges doubled off the wall in left to cap the scoring.
Rains came in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game was called after a 30-minute delay.
The final game of the series will also mark the end of the season's first half. Julio Villalon is expected to join the Smokies roster and make his first Double A start. He'll be opposed by Ryan Snare (5-1, 3.94).
