Knott Ruins O-Rays Rally
June 15, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release
Mobile, Ala. â Jon Knott blasted a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Mobile BayBears to a 3-2 win over the visiting Orlando Rays at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Trailing 2-1 entering the ninth, Orlando catcher Danny Massiatte drove in outfielder Jesus Feliciano to knot the game at two, but in the bottom half of the ninth disaster struck as Knott hit his Southern League-leading 18th home run off Orlando relief pitcher John Rocker (0-1).
Jace Brewer seems to like playing the BayBears, as the light-hitting shortstop hit his third home run of the season and second of the series. All three of Brewer's homers have come at the expense of BayBears pitching.
Orlando starter Jim Magrane pitched well enough to win, surrendering a pair of runs in the first but shutting down the Mobile offense over the next 6.1 innings. Magrane finished with 7.1 IP, allowing two runs â both earned â on four hits while striking out a season-high 10 batters. Mobile won the game despite collecting only four hits on the night.
The Rays and BayBears square off again tomorrow at 8:05 ET, with RHP Travis Minix (2-0, 3.35) making a spot start for Orlando while Mobile counters with RHP Chris Oxspring (3-2, 3.65). The Rays return to Orlando Wednesday for a four game series with the Birmingham Barons at Cracker Jack Stadium.
