Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Shoppers Mall have announced plans to give western Manitoba hockey fans the opportunity to vote for their choice of "Player of the Year".
Beginning this week, fans will be able to vote for their favorite player two ways - 1) by visiting DO Dunwoody Fan Services during each Wheat Kings' home game or 2) going online at www.wheatkings.com
This marks the seventh season that Shoppers Mall has given local fans the opportunity to select the team's Most Valuable Player. After Jordin Tootoo captured the honour three straight years, former Washington Capitals' first round draft pick Eric Fehr won in both 2003-04 and 2004-05 campaigns. Codey Burki, who led the club in scoring last season, was the 2005-06 recipient.
The deadline for fans to vote is Thursday, March 8th with the winner to be announced during the Friday, March 9th game between the Wheat Kings and visiting Prince Albert Raiders.
In other off-ice news, the deadline to make trades in this year's Brandon Sun WHL Fantasy Draft is this Wednesday, January 17th at 12 midnight. The trade deadline comes one week after the WHL's Trade deadline that saw a couple of draft eligible players change uniforms.
Not only will the winner of this year's Fantasy Draft win a 2007-08 Wheat Kings' Season Ticket, they will take home a grand prize from Dufresne Furniture and Appliances.
Still with the Wheat Kings, Colorado Avalanche second round draft choice Codey Burki will be reading to students at Douglas Elementary School Tuesday morning - as part of the CIBC Read to Succeed Program - while veterans Bryan Kauk and Theran Yeo will be joined by rookie goalkeeper Joe Caligiuri in Birtle Tuesday night as the Wheat Kings' Coca Cola Minor Hockey Caravan, sponsored by Brandon Source for Sports, makes its second to last trip of the season.
In addition to skating with both the novice and atom teams, the Wheat Kings will be signing autographs and distributing tickets to the Friday, February 2nd game against second place Swift Current to all minor hockey players in the community.
