Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass. - 1B Melvin Falu swatted his 13th home run of the season as part of Brockton's eight-run fourth inning as the Rox steamrolled the Sussex Skyhawks, 13-2, in a Can-Am League game at Campanelli Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sussex drew first blood on C Ryan Boelsen's first-inning RBI double, but the Rox quickly responded with four runs in their half of the frame. Brockton started off by tallying a run without recording a hit, courtesy of two walks and two hit by pitches. LF Mike Conroy then drove in Falu and RF Keith Brachold with a single, followed by another RBI single by SS Dominic Ramos, making the score 4-1.

The Rox exploded in the fourth, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring eight runs. DH Jeff Hanson led off the inning with a walk. CF Chris Valencia then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached base when Sussex pitcher Jusef Frias made an errant throw, allowing Hanson to reach third. 2B Shawn Williams followed suit by bringing home Hanson with a single.

Falu then drove in Williams and Valencia with the 33rd home run of his Rox career, tying Jake Daubert for most in franchise history and putting him in the league lead on the season. Brockton tacked on four more in the inning, courtesy of an RBI single by C Chris Grossman, a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Ramos, and a two-run double from Hanson.

Sussex engineered a single run in the fifth, before Brockton completed the scoring with Ramos' RBI single in the sixth.

The Rox offensive outburst was more than enough of support for starter Mike Smith (8-3), who allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings of work, striking out nine. The eighth victory puts him tied for the league lead with Quebec's Matthew Rusch, while his 71 strikeouts on the season are just three behind teammate Mike Wlodarczyk for best in the Can-Am. Buster Lussier threw the final three innings and earned the save, giving up just one hit and fanning four. Frias (1-3) had a rough night for the Skyhawks, giving up 11 earned runs in four innings pitched for the loss.

Williams went 3-for-4 on the night for the Rox and is now hitting .429 after five games. Grossman and Ramos each had a pair of hits as well. For Sussex, SS Chase Fontaine went 3-for-5, while LF Kraig Binick was 2-for-5 during the evening.

The Rox and Skyhawks will face off in the third of the four-game set on Sunday at Campanelli Stadium, starting at 5:05 for another Sunday Family Fun Day. Mike Wlodarczyk (6-3) toes the slab for Brockton against Jeff Icenogle (4-3).
