New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut their deficit to one, but the red-hot Pittsfield Colonials hung on for their third straight victory over the Jackals, 10-7, on Saturday night in front of 3,631 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium.
After a two-run homer by 3B Jason Taylor highlighted a three-run top of the first inning for Pittsfield, New Jersey 3B Abraham Nunez displayed some power of his own in the bottom of the frame when he unloaded his first home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field with Adam Godwin and Kevin Clark aboard to even the score at 3-3.
From there though, the Colonials plated two runs in the second and two more in the third on a Rafael Cabreja two-run homer to build a commanding 7-3 lead against New Jersey starter Paul Fagan. Fagan (0-1) lasted just four innings in his second start with the Jackals, yielding eight runs on 11 hits in the losing effort.
Nunez added an RBI groundout in the third to make it 7-4, but Taylor struck again in the fourth when he clubbed a solo home run to extend the Pittsfield lead to 8-4.
The Jackals pulled within one at 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth behind an RBI single by 1B Carlos Sosa, a run-scoring double off the bat of 2B Travis Jones, and a Reymond Cruz wild pitch that enabled DH Jacob Butler to score after he reached on a single, but Pittsfield rallied for two insurance runs against reliever Edward Rodriguez in the top of the seventh to establish a 10-7 advantage.
Pittsfield starter Dave Qualben (4-5) allowed seven runs (six earned) on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, but the Colonials bullpen turned in 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief to help the 25-year-old southpaw earn his fourth win of the season and his second against his former team.
Four different Colonials recorded three hits while Pittsfield CF Jerod Edmondson went 1-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 22 games with a second-inning double. For the Jackals, Jones went 2-for-4, Clark scored three times, and Abraham Nunez drove in four runs in the loss.
The Jackals (6-6 second half, 25-33 overall) and Colonials (10-3, 30-30) conclude their four-game weekend series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends southpaw Ryan Lobban (3-1, 4.83) to the mound against Pittsfield right-hander Kyle Zaleski (7-2, 2.02), who leads the Can-Am League in ERA.
