Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Rox starter Wayne Lundgren had a solid start in the second game of Friday night's doubleheader, but it wasn't quite enough as the Quebec Capitales scratched across two runs in the game's final inning to edge Brockton, 3-2, completing the seven-inning Can-Am League doubleheader sweep. The first game saw the Rox build an early lead, only to have the Capitales score six unanswered runs en route to a 6-3 victory.
In the nightcap, Brockton (18-13 second half, 45-33 overall) scored both of its runs in the second inning. RF Melvin Falu led off with a single, followed by a double from DH Keith Brachold; Falu was able to score on the hit, while Brachold scooted to third on an errant relay throw. C Chris Grossman, starting his 28th consecutive game behind the plate for the Rox, then brought home Brachold with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Pitching continued to dominate until the sixth inning, when CF Sebastien Boucher led off the frame with a double, went to third on C Pete LaForest's subsequent single, and scored on 3B Michael Thompson's sacrifice fly, making it 2-1, Rox.
In the seventh, Quebec (21-10, 51-27) 1B Marc Mimeault and RF Anthony Cros led off the innings with back-to-back singles, and were moved to third and second, respectively, with SS Ivan Naccarata's sacrifice bunt. 2B Josh Colafemina then rapped a single to bring home Mimeault and tie the game. Boucher followed with a sacrifice fly off of reliever Brad Hertzler, who had just entered the game in relief of Lundgren, making the score 3-2.
Brockton threatened in its half of the seventh, with 3B Derek Kinzler singling and moving to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there as Andrew Albers preserved the win for the Capitales, registering his 16th save.
In six and one-third innings, Lundgren (4-2) scattered nine hits, fanning six while walking just one. Quebec's Karl Gelinas (7-6) also put together a good start, allowing one earned run in six innings, striking out three for the win.
Eight different Capitales had base hits in the game, with LaForest going 2-for-3. Falu was 2-for-3 on the Brockton side.
The opening game saw Brockton manufacture a run in the first, with CF Chris Valencia singling, stealing second, moving to third on a fly ball by 2B John Parke, and scoring on RF Falu's sacrifice fly. The Rox then added two runs the following inning, with C Grossman scoring on a wild pitch and Valencia coming home on SS Dominic Ramos' RBI groundout.
Quebec began its comeback in the fourth, with 3B Thompson's two-out, two run home run off of Brockton starter Jose Aquino, making the score 3-2. The Capitales tied the game in the fifth, when SS Naccarata knocked a single with two outs, followed by an RBI double off the bat of 2B Colafemina.
LF Robert Wagner gave Quebec the lead the following inning, rapping a two-run home run, his sixth of the season. The Capitales then tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on CF Boucher's sacrifice fly, scoring RF Cros.
Brendon Malkowski (2-1) had a solid outing for Quebec to earn the victory, giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings of work, striking out five. Aquino (1-3) took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits.
Falu, making his first start of the season in right field, went 3-for-3 for Brockton, including his 11th double of the season. Thompson and Wagner both had two-hit games on the Capitales' side.
The two teams meet in the third game of the series tomorrow, as Francisco Ortiz (0-0) makes a spot start for the Rox against Dan Sausville (6-4).
