Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass. - Brockton starter Mike Smith allowed one run over eight innings of work for his seventh victory of the season as the Rox defeated the Pittsfield Colonials, 2-1, in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After a scoreless first three innings, Pittsfield brought home a run in the fourth on 2B Danny Bomback's RBI single, bringing home 1B Jerod Edmondson. Brockton came back in the fifth when LF Mike Conroy led off the inning with a double, moved to third on 2B Scott Wearne's single, and scored on CF Chris Valencia's RBI fielder's choice.

The Rox (1-1 second half, 28-21 overall) took the lead for good in the seventh, with Conroy again getting things started with a leadoff single. The Scituate, Mass., native then moved to second on a wild pitch, before Valencia and 1B Melvin Falu loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. With RF Keith Brachold at bat, Conroy scrambled home on a passed ball by Colonials C Scott Knazek.

It was enough for Smith (7-3), who scattered ten hits while striking out six and walking just one, making him the league's first seven-game winner. Hunter Davis pitched a hitless ninth inning for his seventh save of the season. Pittsfield (1-1, 21-28) spoiled a good outing from starter Jon Venters, allowing a run on six hits in his first professional start. Rafael Lluberes (1-1) gave up the seventh-inning run and took the loss.

Conroy led the way for the Rox with a 3-for-3 night, while Edmondson and Bomback both had a pair of hits for the Colonials.

The two teams meet in the rubber match of the series on Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m., with Pittsfield's David Qualben (2-4) facing Brockton's Mike Wlodarczyk (6-2).
