Jackals Drop Slugfest at Worcester

Worcester, Mass. - In a game that featured five home runs, the Worcester Tornadoes slugged their way to a 12-3 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Tuesday night at Hanover Insurance Park.

Tornadoes right-hander John Kelly (2-6) earned his third win in as many starts against the Jackals this season while New Jersey starter Nick Asselin (1-7) yielded eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.

After falling behind 1-0 early, New Jersey tied the game at one in the top of the third inning when left fielder Jeff Grose led off with a double before scoring on an RBI groundout off the bat of center fielder Adam Godwin. From there though, the Tornadoes controlled the contest after scoring three runs in the third inning to gain the lead for good.

Jackals second baseman Travis Jones and designated hitter Jacob Butler each connected on solo home runs in the loss while Worcester catcher Craig Maddox launched a three-run shot with center fielder Danny Santiesteban adding a seventh-inning grand slam.

For the Jackals, Godwin went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

The Jackals (0-2 second half, 19-29 overall) and Tornadoes (2-0, 21-28) conclude their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Hanover Insurance Park when New Jersey sends left-hander Ryan Lobban (3-1, 4.91) to the mound against his former team while Worcester counters with right-hander Justin Knoff (1-0, 0.00), who tossed five one-hit innings in his Tornadoes debut last Thursday in a 9-0 Worcester win at Sussex.
