Fresno Falcons News Release

SAN DIEGO – The Fresno Falcons kicked off an 11-game road trip Saturday night with their ninth consecutive road win, a 4-3 effort against the San Diego Gulls at the San Diego Sports Arena before 6,840.

Both teams had plenty of chances in the first period as they generated a combined 24 shots on goal but each came away with just one goal. The Falcons' Jason Weaver opened the scoring with his 17th of the season off a rebound at 6:27. San Diego responded three minutes later when Dean Tiltgen beat Fresno goaltender Mark Gowan with a slapshot from the left wing, and the clubs headed to the second tied at one.

The Falcons took their second lead of the game when Brad Both scored his fifth of the season off a wrist shot from the slot at 5:47 of the middle frame. Yet again, though, the Gulls overcame the one-goal deficit. Mark Pederson notched his 15th power play tally of the year at 11:46 to tie the game at two. Fresno then answered with two power play goals of their own. Cory Murphy blasted home his 13th of the season at 14:51 and Colin Embley re-directed an effort from Drew Schoneck to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead after two.

Fresno would need both power play markers as R.J. Enga made it a one-goal contest with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Gowan withstood heavy pressure from the Gulls down the stretch on his way to making 41 saves, and the Falcons held on to win, 4-3.

Fresno's record is now 28-18-5 with 61 points, six behind the third-place Bakersfield Condors.

The Falcons continue the longest road trip in franchise history tomorrow afternoon at Long Beach against the Ice Dogs. All of the play-by-play action can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 3:50 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show. The 11-game trek then continues on Tuesday and Wednesday in Anchorage against the Aces.
