ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Idaho scored a pair of power play goals while holding Anchorage scoreless in four chances to squeak out a 2-1 decision in front of 4,205 Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.

The Steelheads (40-11-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 12-minute mark of the first period, as Dan Shermerhorn tapped in a cross-ice pass from Scott Swanson. With a two-man advantage in the second period, Idaho's Marty Flichel banged home his 32nd goal of the year at 7:20 for a two-goal spread. But the Steelheads failed to capitalize on a subsequent five-on-three situation and Anchorage remained within striking distance heading into the final 20 minutes. Midway through the third period, Kevin McNeill rammed home a loose puck in front, his fourth goal in the last five games (all against Idaho), and the Aces suddenly were within 2-1. The Steelheads managed to protect that one-goal lead as goaltender Blair Allison faced just 17 shots. Christian Soucy, who had blanked Idaho Friday, took the hard-luck loss despite 24 stops. The Steelheads won 14 of the 16 games played between the two teams this season.

Anchorage (13-40-2) continues its 11-game homestand Tuesday and Wednesday night against defending Taylor Cup champion Fresno. The Aces are winless in their last seven games against the Falcons and trail the fourth-place team by 33 points with 17 games left on their regular season schedule, meaning that any combination of an Anchorage defeat or Fresno victory will officially eliminate the Aces from the upcoming Taylor Cup Playoffs. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
